Raising children (occasionaly a husband) and running the house like a well oiled machine is an art and a practice of trial and error. This site is dedicated to those women out there who try to do it all. This is why we do it!
Getting kids to clean up their toys can be a frustrating task, but with a few simple steps it can be done.
First filter out the broken and unused toys. This is easier without the kids around. If it hasn’t been used in two or three months, is broken or missing pieces, get rid of it. If your child hasn’t touched it in six months, he won’t even know it is missing. Group the toys into basic categories that are easy for the child to understand. (Ex. Barbies, stuffed animals, action figures)
Once the basic categories are established it is time to find containers. You may have plastic bins at home or you may need to do some shopping. The containers should be sturdy and fun. Let your child help pick them out and make labels for each one. The labels can be pictures of the contents or word labels for older children.
It is time for the initial setup. Pick a designated “toy” area and have the children help put the toys into their new homes. This will give the children a sense of ownership of the space and be more willing to take care of it. After all the toys are in their homes, play a quick quiz game with the kids to reinforce where each toy goes.
Turn picking up into a habit by having a “clean up” time at the same time everyday. It is important to participate in clean up time for at least the first week so the children get the hang of doing it properly.
With the right organization and consistency you can help them be independent little picker-uppers and cross one more task off your list!
TIP: Use container to fit the toys, don’t try to fit the toy to the container.
